  • We use our mobile devices all the time to do all kinds of things.

There are 690 million Google searches from mobile phones per day. It’s true. We googled it.

2.7 hours per day are spent socialising on our mobile phones – twice the time we spend eating.

15.7 billion texts are sent each month. That’s 363,426 per minute or 6,057 right this second.

200 million YouTube videos are watched on mobile devices each day. That’s a lot of cat videos.

government regulations

All right, here are the details. The FCC regulation on cell phone radiation states that a cell phone with a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR*) of less than 1.6 W/kg is safe. However, the FCC regulation assumes that users will not put their cell phones next to their bodies.

*SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate and it measures the radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by human tissue.

cell phone instructions

Just in case you haven’t read your mobile device’s user manual, we pulled a couple all-nighters and did it for you. Here are some interesting quotes we found:

Apple iPhone

"iPhone’s SAR measurement may exceed the FCC exposure guidelines for bodily worn operation if positioned less than 15mm (5/8 inch) away from the body…

[T]o be sure that human exposure to RF energy does not exceed the FCC, [Industry Canada], and European Union guidelines, always follow these precautions.

When on a call using the built-in audio receiver in iPhone, hold iPhone with the dock connector pointed down toward your shoulder to increase separation from the antenna. When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15mm (5/8 inch) away from the body…”

BlackBerry

“…keep the device at least 0.98 inches (25mm) from your body when the BlackBerry device is turned on and connected to a wireless network. When using any data feature of the BlackBerry device…keep the device at least 0.98 inches (25mm) from your body.”

Electromagnetic radiation

Did you know that the signal strength of your mobile device is related to the magnitude or intensity of the EMR (electromagnetic radiation) it produces and receives? It’s true. The lower your signal strength, the harder your phone works; and the harder your phone works, the greater the intensity of EMR emitted by your phone. While the long-term health effects of exposure to microwave EMR are unknown, Pong proactively helps you limit exposure without decreasing your signal strength.

ABSORPTION INTO HEAD & BODY

The degree to which cell phone radiation and radiation from other mobile devices penetrates into your head and body depends on the electrical properties and anatomical proportions of your biological tissue. Since children have thinner skulls, skin, and ears, radiation waves travel even further into a child’s brain than they do into an adult’s brain. And until science sorts out whether or not all that added radiation is a good or bad thing, we’ll be casing out the place in Pong.

Specific Absorption Rate

Governmental bodies like the FCC have RF limits that must be met before a device can gain access to the market. Cell phones must have SAR under 1.6 W/kg before gaining FCC approval.

POSSIBLE CARCINOGEN

In May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified cell phone radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans. It recommended that “Consumers should consider ways of reducing their exposure.” The governments of the U.K., Finland, India, and France have adopted a precautionary principle regarding exposure to cell phone radiation. Israel is also proposing legislation that would require cell phones to carry a label stating “Warning: the Health Ministry cautions that heavy use and carrying the device next to the body may increase the risk of cancer, especially among children.”

RADIATION Redistribution

Using a custom-engineered Coupled Antenna System (CAS), Pong is the only technology proven in FCC-certified laboratories to reduce our exposure to mobile device radiation by up to 95% below the FCC limit without compromising our device’s ability to communicate. We’re not even making that up. It was recently verified in an extensive, independent test by Wired Magazine.

Total Radiated Power

TRP is a measure of the radiation your mobile devices are emitting. TRP isn’t bad. In fact, it’s what gives you a strong mobile connection. Pong technology is unique in that it doesn’t decrease the TRP of your mobile device. It just redirects that radiation away from your head and body. That’s a win for your phone and a win for you. Win. Win.

SIGNAL STRENGTH

There are a number of products including cell phone shields in the market today that claim to reduce cell phone radiation. The FTC advises consumers to avoid such products. While many simply don’t work, others actually block the radiation your devices need in order to communicate with cell phone towers. Unfortunately when shields block radiation, mobile devices work even harder to communicate. Pong technology, on the other hand, doesn’t block radiation; it simply redirects it away from your head and body.

FCC-CERTIFIED Laboratories

Pong has been tested at CETECOM and RF Exposure Lab, both of which are recognized by the TCB (Telecommunications Certification Body) and capable of issuing FCC approvals. They regularly perform SAR measurements according to U.S., Canadian, European, and Australian standards for mobile devices. Visit the CETECOM and RF Exposure Lab websites for more information.

PROTECTING PEOPLE

While we care about protecting our cell phones, we care more about protecting people. Everything we do is grounded in science, and we don’t make claims that we cannot validate. We believe that cell phone radiation is a serious issue, even though research is still being done to determine the effects radiation has on our brain and body. That’s why we choose to be proactive about our health.
